Meso Maya

Last time I went to Dallas, I went with my little cousins to a PetLand for them to play with the puppies. Curiously enough, we decided to look for a place to eat, and conveniently enough, we found this place right next to the pet store called “Meso Maya”. Now, I have been victim of some pretty dubious Mexican food in the past, and with the abundance that flirts with saturation of Mexican restaurants in Texas. This made me skeptical, at best, in going into yet another Mexican restaurant.

Entering Meso

Meso Maya certainly takes the concept of Mexican food brings it to a slightly more upscale tone. The place is spacy and counts with a bar in the center of the restaurant, with the tables surrounding every side of the bar but the back, which has the kitchen on a glass window so you can see the cooks at work, something I am a personal fan of.

The Service

Service at Meso Maya was pretty good overall. Our server was attentive, and knew how to speak Spanish (which I don’t deem obligatory if you work in a Hispanic restaurant, but if you’re going to an ethnic-based restaurant, it’s a nice touch to see service that blends into the concept).

The Food

Aztec Budin

Probably the most creative dish on the menu. A plate of beef with what resonates with a lasagna made of tortillas, all bathed in a sauce. Never had anything like this before, and never had I seen this in any other Mexican restaurant. The meat was incredibly tender and the lasagna-esque component was a great counter to the beef’s tanginess. One of the most interesting dishes I’ve ever had and would definitely like to expand on it.

Churros

Probably the highlight of the night, simple vanilla ice cream with three caramel-filled churros that would be, without hesitation, the best I’ve ever had in my life.

Conclusion

Meso Maya is definitely a fresh spin on your traditional let’s-go-to-a-Mexican-restaurant-to-eat-tacos-and-quesadillas kind of place. Albeit, they do count with all that cliché taco-quesadilla stuff, BUT they have so much more to their menu that you are instantly motivated to try something new. Definitely a recommended restaurant for anyone who is the least bit appealed by Mexican food, Tex-Mex or any of it’s variations!
